How can I be sure that Horizon Organic treats its dairy cows humanely? |
Compassionate animal care is one of the fundamental principles of organic farming, and is a core element of our mission. Because organic farming relies on consistent preventive care - rather than the "quick fix" of antibiotics – cows on an organic dairy naturally receive more close daily attention. It's the right thing to do. Organic farmers recognize that keeping cows healthy with wholesome organic pasture and feed, fresh air, clean water and plenty of room to roam is the best way to build a sustainable, profitable dairy.

How do you know what cows want? |
Ask them! Not literally, of course. But any organic farmer will tell you that the key to successful organic animal care is paying close attention. No one knows this better than Dr. Hubert Karreman - a leading authority on holistic animal care and author of Treating Dairy Cows Naturally. Dr. Karreman is a trusted advisor to many Horizon Organic family farmers, and to our company-owned farms. We also work closely with Holistic Management International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable resource and animal management.

What happens when an organic cow gets sick? |
Organic farmers treat their cows with natural remedies such as aloe, yogurt, garlic and sometimes, a simple walk around the field. These cures were highly prized by dairy farmers in our grandparents' generation, and they're just as effective today. Most organic farmers find that cows get sick less frequently and live longer when treated naturally.

Does this mean that cows that need antibiotics can't have them? |
Not at all. If a cow comes down with something that doesn't respond to homeopathic and natural treatment, she will be given antibiotics and taken out of the organic herd.
