Your certifier will review your Farm Plan and other paperwork, and supervise your progress
throughout the three-year transition.

 |
Help you complete the necessary paperwork. |
Pasture and crop land must be maintained under continuous organic management for at
least three years prior to certification. This means caring for your land without the
use of prohibited substances, which include but are not limited to:
 |
Most pesticides and herbicides. |
 |
Most commercial fertilizers. |
 |
GMO seeds or treated seeds. |
Your farm support rep can provide plenty of background information, including lists of
permitted and prohibited treatments, and tips on where to find quality organic fertilizers.
The milk from cows may be certified after one year of organic management. During the one-year transition, cows may be fed on third-year transitional pasture or crops and certified organic feed.
For this year and from this point forward, you will manage your herd according to the National Organic
Program regulations. In addition to using only organic–approved crops, pasture and feed, you’ll eliminate the use of prohibited substances, which include but are not limited to:
 |
Antibiotics. |
 |
Added growth hormones. |
Your Horizon Organic rep can help you locate quality organic feed, and can put you in touch with
other organic farmers in your area for guidance and advice. When appropriate, Horizon Organic
offers financial aid to support our farmers through this challenging third year.
Once you have satisfied the requirements above, and your certifier has completed the necessary
paperwork, your conversion is complete. Congratulations!
As your certification date approaches, you’ll work closely with both your certifier and your
Horizon Organic farm support representative to address any issues regarding final paperwork,
milk inspections, truck routes and other details.
