Organic Yogurt

What are the types of cultures added to Horizon Organic® yogurt? What are the health benefits of these cultures?

Horizon Organic Dairy adds five live and active cultures to its yogurt: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus casei. These cultures help keep the intestinal tract healthy by deterring the growth of harmful bacteria and encouraging the proliferation of beneficial organisms. Researchers have also found that live and active cultures can help support healthy digestive and immune function.

Why does Horizon Organic Dairy use sugar instead of honey to sweeten yogurt?

The use of certified organically grown and processed sugar in Horizon Organic® yogurt provides a more consistent flavor quality with a slightly lower amount of total sugars in the yogurt formulas. Using organic sugar in the nonfat yogurts produces no significant nutritional differences from honey and maintains similar nutritional-value labeling for diabetics. The sugar we use comes from a cooperative of small organic family farmers in Paraguay. Certified organic sugar is not bleached or refined, and organic sugar is hand cut and crushed instead of being burned off and harvested.

How long can I keep Horizon Organic yogurt after the date on the package?

The date on the package is called the "sell-by date", which means that the product will stay fresh for approximately seven days beyond this date provided that it has been refrigerated properly and remains unopened. Horizon Organic yogurt, though, will keep only seven days after opening, even if it is well before the sell-by date.

Is the milk used in Horizon Organic yogurt pasteurized?

Yes. All Horizon Organic dairy products, including cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt and cream cheese, start with certified organic, Grade A, pasteurized milk.

Where do you get the fruit and other ingredients that you use in your fruit yogurts?

We obtain fruit from hundreds of certified organic farms throughout the world. Most of our fruit come from the northwest United States, though blueberries are harvested in Wisconsin and Michigan. Vanilla and coffee come from South America, Madagascar and Asia. The farms that grow the fruit for Horizon Organic yogurts are third-party certified organic, which means that an authorized independent certifying organization certifies the farm's land and crops as organic.

When is it okay to give my baby yogurt?

Horizon Organic baby yogurts are targeted for 1-3 year olds and are made with Grade A certified organic whole milk to provide essential fats to promote proper brain development and vital vitamin absorption. Ask your pediatrician to be sure it is the right time to begin introducing whole milk yogurt into your child's diet.

Does the baby yogurt contain fruit bits or pieces that might make swallowing difficult for my baby?

Horizon Organic baby yogurt is specially textured for babies-smooth and creamy without fruit particulates, pieces or bits. Ask your pediatrician to be sure he or she recommends introducing our yogurt into your child's diet.

Can the yogurt tubes be frozen?

Like milk, yogurt should be stored between 33º F and 40º F. Yogurt tubes can be frozen, however they should not be thawed and re-frozen.
