| Even in dairy-intensive New York State, you won't find another farm quite like Zane Smith's. It's the first and only dairy in the U.S. to milk exclusively Normande cows — a breed more commonly used for beef in this country. Zane was raised in the city, but he's always had an interest in genetics and a related passion for animal husbandry. In fact, his decision to raise Normandes stems from extensive study of the breed's proven hardiness, longevity and dairy profitability in Europe and South America. His choice has paid off: "I have a cow being milked as we speak who's 18 years old and just produced a heifer."
