Built in the early days of the organic movement, our company-owned farms represent our abiding faith in organic dairy. At a time when many dismissed organic as a passing fad, our founders anticipated the movement's explosive growth, investing in company-owned dairies to supplement our core milk supply from family farms. Our company-owned farms helped secure the future of the organic milk industry by proving the viability of larger-scale organic dairying.
Today - even as our community of family farms grows - we continue to consider our two company-owned dairies vital to our work and mission. In addition to supplementing our core milk supply, our company-owned farms serve as a learning center in the areas of holistic animal care and land rejuvenation. We are proud to partner with experts such as Allan Savory of Holistic Management International and renowned veterinarian Dr. Hubert Karreman to explore and refine best organic practices.
We have adopted a set of farm standards for our company-owned farms in Idaho and Maryland. The Horizon Organic "Standards of Care" represent a comprehensive set of guidelines that govern how we manage our farms and encompass every aspect of life on an organic dairy farm - from calf-raising to health care to pasture management. Collectively, these belief statements ensure that Horizon Organic's farms provide the purest, safest, and highest-quality organic milk and dairy products to consumers, and uphold the highest standards in caring for the land and animals. The "Standards of Care" comply with the USDA requirements for organic certification but contain important advances, as well, especially in the areas of calf-raising, alternative veterinary care, and pasture management.
