Horizon Organic® and Silk® Soymilk Proudly Sponsor Farm Aid® 2007: A HOMEGROWN Festival
Awards were given for Outstanding New Organic Producer and Staff's Choice
Broomfield, Colo., Sept 7, 2007 – Horizon Organic® and Silk® Soymilk, the nation's best-selling organic and natural brands, continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to America's family farmers by sponsoring Farm Aid 2007: A HOMEGROWN Festival. It’s Silk's sixth year, and Horizon Organic's fifth, sponsoring the event.
"We're proud to continue supporting Farm Aid, an organization that supports organic food production and family farmers—two values very near and dear to Horizon Organic and Silk," said Joe Scalzo, Chief Executive Officer for WhiteWave Foods, parent company for Horizon Organic and Silk. "We believe both are critical to the sustainability of agriculture and the health of our animals, people and planet. Because Farm Aid shares these core values, by extension, we are able to make a meaningful impact in these areas."
Horizon Organic will also announce Jim and Toni Young of Antwerp, N.Y., as winners of its second annual HOPE Award at the event. The award recognizes farmers and their families who have not only successfully navigated the transition to organic dairy, but who also serve as a model for other organic farmers and will help inspire others to make the switch. The Young family will receive the award at a special presentation following the Farm Aid press conference on Sunday, September 9.
Horizon Organic will also announce winners of its annual Quality Awards at the special event following the Farm Aid press conference. Debbie Timm, Barbie Payzant and Paul and Diane Staehely of Staehely's Valley Veue Dairy will be honored as part of the brand’s Producer Milk Quality Program. The recipients were selected based on strict criteria for milk quality. In order to be considered for the award, farmers must ship organic milk to the company for one full calendar year, and the average test results for each shipment of that milk must rank in the top 10 percent in their respective states.
Horizon Organic and Silk maintain a proud tradition of social and environmental responsibility, and for the second year in a row, are committing to reduce the environmental impact of the Farm Aid concert through the purchase of Green Tags from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. This means that the energy used to power the concert will be replaced by wind energy. In addition, Horizon Organic and Silk have purchased additional Green Tags to offset the energy used for an estimated 35,000 attendees to drive to the venue*. Renewable energy is an affordable and inexhaustible power source that does not cause pollution, generate waste, or deplete natural resources.
Silk and Horizon Organic have also committed to a ZERO Waste sponsorship for the event. The two brands have arranged for 50 recycling centers to be positioned throughout the site during the two day event so that attendees can dispose of their trash properly.
Farm Aid 2007: A HOMEGROWN Festival will feature a full day of music, an abundance of family farm food vendors, and hands-on, interactive exhibits with farmers and family farm supporters that inspire living a homegrown life. For the first time at a major concert event, the goal is to serve 100 percent local, organic, humanely-raised and family-farmed food.
*Green Tag purchase calculated for 35,000 attendees, estimating 4 people per vehicle, traveling from within 50 miles at 20 miles per gallon for a total of 312,500 miles.
