Horizon Organic Position Statement on Cloned Animals

BROOMFIELD, Colo. Dec. 22, 2007 – Horizon Organic® will not accept milk from cows that have been cloned. The practice of cloning is considered part of the *excluded methods that are prohibited and do not comply with the National Organic Program regulations set by the USDA.

In addition, our decision not to accept this milk is based on meeting our consumers’ expectations. We see no consumer benefit from this technology.

Numerous surveys have shown that Americans are not interested in buying dairy products that contain milk from cloned cows and Horizon Organic is responding to the needs of our consumers.

(*A variety of methods used to genetically modify organisms or influence their growth and development by means that are not possible under natural conditions or processes are prohibited and considered as “not compatible” with organic milk production standards. These excluded methods listed under 7 C.F.R.δ 205.2 include: cell fusion, microencapsulation and macroencapsulation, and recombinant DNA technology, including gene deletion, gene doubling, introducing a foreign gene, and changing the positions of genes when achieved by recombinant DNA technology. Such methods do not include the use of traditional breeding, conjugation, fermentation, hybridization, in vitro fertilization, or tissue culture.)
