Horizon Organic Launches ‘Year of Organic Good Beginnings‘ Education Initiative
As Survey Finds Americans Plan Healthier Eating Habits in 2005

March 3, 2005

BOULDER, Colo., March 3, 2005 - With a new survey indicating that seven of eight Americans plan to practice healthier eating habits in 2005, Horizon Organic is launching a national education initiative to promote the positive role that organic food plays in the overall health and well-being of consumers, especially children.

The nation's leading brand of certified organic milk products is kicking off its ‘Year of Organic Good Beginnings‘ with a grant to the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, a not-for-profit group dedicated to improving the health and safety of mothers, babies and families through better education and collaborative partnerships. The grant will be used to develop and distribute a brochure that addresses What Parents Need to Know About Organic Foods and Nutrition.

Horizon Organic's support of the Coalition signifies the importance the brand places on providing moms with kid-friendly organic choices produced without the use of antibiotics, added growth hormones or dangerous pesticides.

“Children's growing bodies simply do not need unnecessary chemicals,” says registered dietitian Julie Burns. “Luckily, for parents, organic alternatives exist for almost all of kids' favorite foods, including milk, yogurt and other popular dairy products.”

Horizon Organic also will provide educational information about organic foods to teachers and retailers in conjunction with the Organic Trade Association in a ‘Go Organic for Earth Day‘ campaign. In addition, a fall campaign will focus on promoting organic foods in children's school lunch boxes as they return to school.

Horizon Organic's efforts to educate about the benefits of organic food comes as a fresh survey of 1,000 adult Americans - conducted by Opinion Research Corp. on behalf of the company - shows increased interest in going organic. Of the 87 percent of respondents who intend to practice healthier eating habits in 2005, 45 percent said they plan to add organics to their diets.

While the popularity of organic products has been rising, the industry still has lots of work to do to educate all Americans about the benefits of organic“It's not enough that more consumers are buying more organic products today--consumers need to know why organics are an important choice for themselves and their children,” explains Gwen Scherer, Horizon Organic's Director of Marketing.

Organic products are produced without using:

  • Antibiotics: The widespread use of antibiotics on healthy livestock may lower the effectiveness of the same antibiotics on our own bodies.

  • Added growth hormones: Growth hormones naturally occur in all milk. However, conventional dairy cows sometimes are injected with additional growth hormones to increase milk production. Several countries have banned the use of these hormones because of potential effects on both human and animal health. Organic foods come from cows that are not given added growth hormones.

  • Dangerous pesticides: A University of Washington study recently showed that children who eat predominantly organic diets have far lower levels of pesticide residues in their bodies than children who eat mostly non-organic food. Organic farmers do not use harmful chemicals.

It is important for consumers to know what their choices are and why organic foods make sense when it comes to feeding themselves and their families. Among other things, the omnibus survey also found:

  • Three-in-10 Americans report they are buying more organic foods than they were a year ago, with a third of parents with children under six years old increasing their organic purchases within the past year.

  • More than three-in-four organic consumers cited the healthfulness of organics as the reason for buying them, while 68 percent buy organics for their nutritional value and to reduce the amount of pesticides.

  • Less than one in five is aware that the Department of Agriculture regulates organics.
